Hi everyone!
I am very curious to find out from everyone on your choices of motor oil for your rides and a little detail on the reasons why you've decided to do so.
I personally stick with Mobil 1 5w-30 for my Cobra because of it's stability and enhanced properties. I always use any low price 5W-20 for my daily drivers. I change out all of them about every 3 to 6 months depending on how dark the oil gets over time.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Tom

I have been using Motorcraft full synthetic 5w-50 for the Boss because there aren't that many manufactures of 5w-50 and that is the required oil. I will probably switch this spring to Amsoil as they just introduced a 5w-50. I used to use Amsoil in my Cobra and it was awesome. Amsoil and royal purple are pretty much the industry standard. You can't go wrong with either.

The mustang gets 5w30 Motorcraft semi synthetic and a Fl820s filter. This is what the last owner used in it and I just continued that trend.
My wife's escape get 5w20 Mobil 1 also with a Motorcraft filter.
The Ranger and my sons Civic gets regular 5w30 Dino and a motorcraft or wix ffilter

I would like to try to run a 5W40 or 5W50 but I am concerned that a higher viscosity oil would be an issue with the tiny pinhole oil feed line on the supercharger.
I also use the Motorcraft FL-820S filter on my Cobra and a FL-400 filter on my Edge.
I think I always get a Fram filter for my wife's Volvo. It has that paper cartridge style with a plastic screw in reservoir.

Well I am no oil scientist nor do I claim to be but you will not find amsoil or royal purple in anything I own. Not saying it is bad oil at all, it is just I do know about Amsoil's dirty little secret. They are marketing companies before they are oil companies.
Some of you may know me and some you may not. I raced SCCA club racing for years. I hung out with pro teams but never drove professionally. I ran Valvoline in my race cars both before and after they sponsored me for oil. Had full access to their engineering and technical staff. I can tell you which oils were ran in the Hendrick and Jack Rousch Sprint Cup cars as well as they where sponsored by Valvoline at the time. I never had an oil related failure in a race engine!!! And I ran mineral oil, not synthetic based on the engineers at Valvoline's technical knowledge.
I will tell you when guys were spending 50 to 60k for their professional series race engines, that ran one race and were then rebuilt, I saw a lot of fresh cases of Mobil 1 going into those engines. I saw more Redline than Amsoil by far. Never really saw the Purple stuff. It was Mobil 1, Vavoline, Quacker State, Pennzoil and Kendall.
Ford did a massive amount of research for oil in recent years and their oils are known for being very good oils. I do not care what some non oil engineer says on other sites. I would run the Motorcraft 5w-50 in the boss all day long but I run 5w-50 Mobil 1 in the Boss and will continue to as I buy it onsale at NAPA. I run 0w-40 Mobil 1 in my Audi Q5 and A4.

Some thoughts I had today just to increase thoughts on oils and how complicated they really are today.
It would take a few text books to explain oils today. What anti wear packages work and how they work, how they work and change over time and use. How certain anti wear and/or anti friction additives can actually accelerate engine wear under certain conditions. Don't mess with your manufactures recommendations today. The additives can be added for anti wear, friction reduction, corrosion (some for he engine components and some for the oil components). Oils can be created to pass one test the best (to dazzle you) but will be out performed by a general oil. Do you know if the 4 ball test is really proving a specific oil with protect you piston rings better? Your valve train? What about EPA requirements forced on your engine design and oil design.
